What Is Scoliosis?

Your spine is really the foundation on which your body hangs. The majority of your nervous system runs through your spinal cord in one way or another. All the vertebrae keep you flexible and able to twist and move. If you start to have any problems with your spine, it can really affect your entire body, including causing you to walk in odd ways and have pain throughout your entire body. One problem that can happen with the spine is scoliosis. This tends to affect children more than adults. So what is scoliosis, how can it affect your child, and what can you do to help them?

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an unnatural curvature of the spine. It can curve from side to side. Your spine is anchored at the base of your spine and the top of your pelvis. When your spine is healthy and normal, it runs in a straight line from top to bottom. In a spine with scoliosis, the middle of the spine could curve to one one side. It could be a slight curve, or much more pronounced, which could look like one side of a parenthesis. In this form of scoliosis, one shoulder and one hip end up higher than the other because the spine curving to that side will push them up, and that pulls the other side down. There is also a form of scoliosis that will over accentuate the natural curvature of the spine from front to back. The chest will push out further and will cause back pain. It is possible for your child to have both forms of scoliosis. What are some treatments for it?

Treatments

There are various treatments that you can get for your child. What you do depends on how severe the scoliosis is. The most severe cases will need to have surgery to treat it. The doctor may have to install a metal cage around the spine with rods that the spine can be anchored to so that it can be straightened out. There are other treatments that you can take advantage of, especially if your child's involvement isn't severe. One thing that can happen is that your child can wear a brace that will help to straighten out their spine. You can also combine that with chiropractic treatments, which can help the spine regain its natural alignment and be healthier.
